The pathway to peace

As 2013 draws to a close and we take stock of where we are in T&T/the world, it is clear that, in many ways, our world is in a sorry state and desperately needs healing. We continue to close our hearts to the needs of millions of our brothers and sisters.

Read Pope Francis’ first message for World Day of Peace on the theme: “Fraternity, the foundation and pathway to peace.” When the theme was announced in August, the Vatican pointed out that “an overemphasis on ‘personal well-being’ and general indifference have eroded any sense of responsibility toward others.” His Peace message highlights “the need to combat the ‘throwaway culture’ and to promote instead a ‘culture of encounter’, in order to build a more just and peaceful world.”

During a recent discussion with my great-niece in London via Skype, we were speaking about how commercialised Christmas has become. As a 13-year-old Catholic, she is quite aware of the true meaning of Christmas, but admitted that she is often caught up in the hype about what she and her friends are getting for Christmas – and it’s all about brand names. In my day my friends and I talked about what we hoped we would get for Christmas.

Preparing for the birth of Christ

As we prepare for the coming of the birth of Jesus, let us see Him in the faces of our “neighbours”. Amidst the splendour of the decorations in the malls and the “goodies” in our stores and supermarkets, spare a thought for Jesus who lives among us and who is hungry. See Jesus in the homeless, the destitute, and those in need. He came so that we may have life, and have it to the full. Yet thousands in T&T and millions around the world live like Lazarus, waiting for the crumbs to fall from the table of the rich.

Reflections on the Caribbean Court of Justice

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ and Director, CREDI

“…in an ideal world, Commonwealth countries – including those in the Caribbean – would stop using the Privy Council and set up their own final courts of appeal instead” (Lord Phillips, 2009).

In December 2012, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) launched its Strategic Plan for 2013 to 2017 under the theme Responsive, Innovative, Inspirational. Its Mission is clear: “To protect and promote the rule of law as a court of final appeal and as guardian of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas by guaranteeing accessibility, fairness, efficiency and transparency, delivering clear and just decisions in a timely manner.”

A compassionate response to persons with HIV and AIDS

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ and Director, CREDI

Today is World AIDS Day.

We can all be change agents in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Are we doing enough to reach out in love and compassion to those infected and affected by HIV and AIDS? What more can we do e.g. as individuals, in our parishes and schools? Are we empowering our young people and adults to make informed choices, based on the tenets of our faith?
