A lesson for social justice movements today

By Fr Curtis G Poyer, CCSJ/AMMR

During the 1980s, human rights movements emerged in many parts of Latin America and the Caribbean. This was because from the 1950s onwards, several governments in the Americas, with weak or non-existent democracies, using their military, paramilitary, and secret police summarily and arbitrarily rounded up and executed literally thousands of their own citizens–no due process and no recognisable respect for human rights.

Promoting the dignity of the poor and vulnerable

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & AMMR

“The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty!” — Pope Francis.

Today, as we observe World Day of the Poor, and begin Justice, Peace and Community Week, let’s reflect on the role that each of us is playing in building God’s Kingdom on earth.

Promoting generosity of character

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & AMMR

“Generosity is the predisposition to love open-handedly. Our hands matter, both literally and symbolically. In the open hand, our palms are up, and our fingers extended. A closed hand is usually a clenched fist, tightly grasping what it wants to keep or tensely  preparing for battle. To be generous requires that we open our hands” (Gregory Spencer).

Reflecting on today’s gospel, Mark 12:38–44, gives us an opportunity to prepare to observe World Day of the Poor next Sunday, November 14.

Link your faith to action

by Zahirah Mohammed, Child Friendly Spaces Support Officer, CCSJ/AMMR

“None of us can think we are exempt from concern for the poor and for social justice” – Pope Francis, Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (EG), The Joy of the Gospel [201].

Our Catholic faith is a ‘contract’ of our responsibilities and unconditional duties to society. At our baptism, we ‘sign’ this non-negotiable contract.

Reflecting on poverty

By Shelly-Ann T Simon, Case Management Officer – Alternative Care, CCSJ & AMMR, rcsocialjustice.org

Very often, we hear conversations about poverty where there is always some debate about what poverty is and what it is not. Some persons even argue that the concept of poverty is not real given the abundance of natural resources that exists in the world today. The latter argument typically revolves around the wasting of food, the move away from agriculture or the destruction of the planet.

A ‘road map’ for family life

By Shelly-Ann Simon, Case Management Officer – Alternative Care, CCSJ/AMMR, rcsocialjustice.org

There are many versions of the family. One thing we can say for sure is that family is important.
Some would define the family in terms of structure with each member carrying out a particular role, such as father, mother, child, and so on. Family is where we form emotional connections and learn the values that shape us into adults.

Church clear on vaccinations

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & AMMR

As disciples of Christ, each of us has a duty to use our God-given talents to promote integral human development and to build the common good.

In the face of the dreadful Covid-19 pandemic, Pope Francis, Archbishop Jason Gordon and many others have been encouraging us to take the vaccine to protect our lives and that of others.
Pope Francis has stated that in receiving the vaccine, “we are truly showing love for our neighbour and our God.” I have had my two doses of the vaccine.

Love is for the brave

By Ambrosio A. Valerio Rojas, CCSJ/AMMR, Migrant Support Officer/Translator

“The distinguishing mark of the Christian, today more than ever, must be love for the poor, the weak and the suffering. Living this demanding commitment requires a total reversal of the supposed values that make people seek only their good: power, pleasure, the unscrupulous accumulation of wealth. Yes, it is precisely to this radical conversion that Christ’s disciples are called” (St John Paul II).

Today we see how charity, goodwill and helping others suffer from a social virus that seems to affect the protection and care of the most vulnerable communities.

Strengthening marriage and family

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & AMMR

“My hands used to be sweaty, but Grandma didn’t  mind. She would hold on to my sweaty hand as we walked; chatting with me about what I had done at school that day. I always felt safe in her care.”

As my niece spoke, I could still visualise her holding on to her Grandma’s hand as she walked her home from school as a child.

This week our Archdiocese is observing Marriage and Family Life. Today, July 25, we also observe the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, which Pope Francis instituted to take place each year on the fourth Sunday in July, close to the feast of Sts Joachim and Anne (Monday, July 26), the grandparents of Jesus.

We are interconnected

By Dominique Heffes-Doon, Research and Social Media Officer

“Grief is the acute pain that accompanies loss. Because it is a reflection of what we love, it can feel all-encompassing. Grief is not limited to the loss of people….” – Psychology Today

The Covid-19 pandemic has placed the world in a state of grief. As the above quote from Psychology Today shows, grief can be more than the loss of a deceased individual.
It can be experienced by the loss of a person, a former “pre-Covid” world and even one’s country and identity. In the case of the Venezuelan migrant community, the latter statement is a sobering reality.

It is public knowledge that quite a number of persons have been in prison for a longer time than the maximum sentence they would have received had they been tried and convicted for the crime alleged to have been committed.

Investing in fathers

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

And … be close to his children as they grow.” (Pope Francis)

On Wednesday, June 16, I celebrated my birthday. Birthdays always provide us with an opportunity to reflect on our lives.

Church joins relief efforts for St Vincent after volcano erupts

Let us come together in the Spirit of Solidarity and join Living Water’s Donation efforts.
Please call 1-868-235-5510 or click here to donate online.  Thank you for your critical support at this time.

Volcanoes are not to be taken for granted even when dormant for decades, even centuries. They are sleeping catastrophes…St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) needs immediate regional and global assistance in this time of compounded crises.” (Elizabeth Morgan, Specialist in International Trade Policy and International Politics)

In the midst of COVID-19 pandemic, La Soufrière volcano, located at a height of 1,234 m (4,049 ft)  on the northern part of one of our Caribbean islands, St Vincent, which had erupted 42 years ago in 1979, started showing signs of renewed activity in late December 2020. On the morning of Friday 9 April, SVG’s National Emergency Management Organisation said on Twitter:

“La Soufriere has moved into an explosive state. Plumes up to eight kilometers. Ashfall expected within five minutes#svgeruption2021# 8:54 AM · Apr 9, 2021”

At 9 am that morning the volcano erupted and since then there have been a series of explosive volcanic eruptions on the island. Scientists say that the eruptions are likely to continue for weeks.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), situated in the southern Caribbean,  comprise the main island, St. Vincent, (Capital – Kingstown), which is 26 km (16 mi) long, 15 km (9.3 mi) in width and 344 km2 (133 sq mi) in area, and a chain of 32 smaller islands and cays – 9 of which are inhabited. The Population of SVG is 111, 221 (2021).

There have been at least 5 eruptions of this volcano since March 1718  when 56 deaths were reported. Other eruptions took place in  1812, 1902–3 – when 1680 persons died, 1971–2 and 1979.

As DW News reported: “The Eastern Caribbean is a highly volcanic region with as many as 19 active volcanoes spread out across 11 islands. A 1997 eruption in Montserrat killed at least 19 people.”

On Thursday 8 April, there were several small tremors detected at the volcano, and clouds of steam erupted from its peak. Officials raised the alert level. The media reported that hours after SVG’s Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, issued an order for a full evacuation of the area, La Soufriere volcano erupted just before 9 o’clock am on Friday, 9 April 2021. Six hours later there was a second explosive eruption. Clouds of ash were thrown 20,000 feet in the air. The sky darkened and as thick layers of ash “rained down” covering everything and blowing into homes. A strong smell of sulphur filled the air. Inevitably, there is concern about air quality.

On that morning about 20,000 people were evacuated from the area surrounding the volcano. The airport was closed. There were power outages and the water supply was cut off in many areas. Although there have been no reports of injuries or deaths, the trauma experienced by people, including my many friends who live there, some of whom had retired there from London, is heart-breaking.

Clouds of ash blew to the neighbouring island of Barbados, about 200 km to the east of SVG, covering large parts of the island. The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency said.” Barbadians have been urged to stay indoors as thick plumes of volcanic ash move through the atmosphere.” Grantley Adams International Airport was closed for nearly a week due to the ash that settled there. However, the airport re-opened from 6 p.m. on Friday 16 Apl.  St Lucia and Martinique were also affected by ash that blew to these islands.

In SVG thousands of residents have been sleeping in emergency shelters. Some persons are staying with family and friends. The airspace and airport have been closed due to the thick ash falling.

As the days went by, some rain fell and, when mixed with the ash, it turned into thick sludge and hardened. Flashes of volcanic lightning lit up the sky, and thunder rumbled. The roofs of many buildings have caved in due to the weight of the ash. Media images of persons going back to see how they could tend to their livestock highlight the plight of animals. Eventually, the Government in SVG placed guards so that citizens could not return to the red zone because of the danger caused by the constant eruptions.

On Tuesday April 13, pyroclastic flows “(hot turbulent avalanches of collapsing material from the eruption column) travelled down the Rabacca River towards the east coast and mud flows were observed in Sandy Bay area” (www.volcanodiscovery.com) – down the montainside, into the valleys on both sides of the island – destroying everything in their path. At 4:50 p.m. on Sunday 18 April, there was a further eruption of the Volcano.

Solidarity is a key social justice principle. As National Geographic has noted: “…offers of financial and logistical support have come in from around the region and the world.” Humanitarian assistance and disaster response/relief efforts are underway.

For example, the Catholic Church in the region is playing its part. Archbishop Jason Gordon, Archdiocese of Port of Spain is in contact with Trinidadian-born Bishop Gerard County CSSp of Kingstown, SVG, who says: “”We will come through this.”  And on Sat Apl. 17 and Sun Apl 18, His Grace arranged for a 2nd collection to be earmarked for SVG relief efforts. Persons can also donate online, and Catholic organisations, such as the Commission which I Chair, CCSJ, and the Ecclesial Community, Living Water Community,  and the Society of St Vincent de Paul, are mobilising support. Several other CARICOM countries have offered assistance.

The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) deployed a contingent as part of the Regional Security System’s (RSS) humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) mission. Relief items from St Lucia and also from the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States have also been sent to SVG.

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) sent a vessel, the MV Galleon Passage, with supplies and 50 members of our Defence Force – T&T Regiment, Coast Guard, Air Guard and Reserves, to provide aid. They arrived there on Tuesday 13 April. The contingent consisted of personnel from engineers, infantry/ provost, medical and logistics. They will stay on the island for approximately two weeks in the first instance. They took with them mattresses, water, food essentials, toiletries, hygiene materials, simple medical supplies and other requested items such as water tanks and buckets.

Representatives from the T&T Red Cross Society and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) also accompanied them. The vessel returned with about 75 T&T citizens who were repatriated here from SVG as a result of the crisis.

NGOs, Faith Communities, Individuals and organisations such as The Supermarket Association of T&T is sending more than TT$1million to SVG to assist needy families and The Manufacturers Association is also sending supplies.  The T&T organisation: Is there not a Cause (ITNAC), has already sent a shipment of relief which included water, non-perishable food items, batteries, torchlights, baby supplies, medical supplies, gloves and masks. in TT and across the CARICOM region.

T&T’s Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith, is sending from the Police stores: camouflage uniforms and caps, combat boots, respirators, cots, goggles and blankets. He said that the region’s Commissioners of Police have also been assisting in providing water, packaged meals and raincoats.

On Monday, April 12, the World Bank disbursed US$20 million to support the Government of SVG’s response to the current crisis. Venezuela and the US are also sending aid.

A number of Cruise ships have taken SVG citizens on board and arrangements are being made to take some of them to other islands.

Let us pray for God’s mercies for all those adversely affected by this natural disaster.

Jesus lives!

What joy! What an amazing gift! The tomb is empty! Christ is risen! The Scriptures have been fulfilled: “God so loved the world that He gave His Only Son, that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life.”

The night before His crucifixion, Jesus said to His disciples: “A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends” (Jn 15:13).  Jesus did just that; He made the ultimate sacrifice. He suffered, was crucified, died, was buried, and rose again from the dead, redeeming us from original sin and opening the doors of Heaven.

Sowing gestures of compassion and love

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

Last August, as Vatican News reported, “Pope Francis said that prayers and little gestures silently sow the seed of God’s love in the field of the world, making all things new. These gestures are capable of making the world more beautiful, of illuminating it with a ray of God’s love.”

I thought of these words of wisdom as I watched on TV the funeral in Bedford, UK, of  Captain Sir Tom Moore (in photo) who died of coronavirus on February 2 at the age of 100 years.

Cleanse my heart, O Lord

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“Open your heart to Jesus’ mercy! Say: ‘Jesus… Come, cleanse. Cleanse with Your mercy, with Your tender words, cleanse with Your caresses’. If we open our heart to Jesus’ mercy, in order to cleanse our heart, our soul, Jesus will trust Himself to us.” (Pope Francis).

I remember as a child during a catechism lesson in Chaguanas in preparation for First Communion, how terrified I was when the catechist read from John 2:13–25, the cleansing of the Temple.

Are we listening to Him?

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“… the first duty of the Christian is to listen to the Word of God, to listen to Jesus, because he speaks to us and he saves us by his word. And by this word he makes our faith even stronger and more robust. Listen to Jesus!” (Pope Francis)
Reading today’s gospel for the second Sunday of Lent, Mark 9:2–10, on the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, I reflected on God’s divine revelation of His Son, Jesus, to Peter, James, and John when He said: “This is my beloved Son, the Beloved, listen to him.”
Are we listening to what our Lord is telling us? It’s only if we have an encounter with Christ that we will open our hearts to really listen to what He is saying to us.

Lent: a time for renewing faith, hope and love

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“Lent is a time for deeper dialogue with God through prayer, for renewed gratitude for God’s mercy and for increased compassion for people whose lives are under attack.” Pope Francis.

Pope Francis’ Lenten message this year, is entitled: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem” (Mt 20:18). Lent: a Time for Renewing Faith, Hope and Love.  As he focuses on these three theological virtues, he invites the faithful to “renew our faith, draw from the living waters of hope, and receive with open hearts the love of God.”

Addressing the root causes of crime

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“They are not cockroaches.  They are not monsters. They are of us. Raised for better or worse by this society which continues to enable them. Hypocrisy will not save us. We must find the courage to create change”—Verna St Rose Greaves, social worker, social activist.

Let’s join with others in praying with the family of Andrea Bharatt, who mourn the tragic loss of their loved one, and for the repose of her soul. Pray also for the multitude of other men, women and children who have lost their lives through violence over the years. There is a ground-swell of anger, fear, and frustration.

Fraternal solidarity with the sick

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

The theme of Pope Francis’ message for the 29th World Day of the Sick on February 11 is: You have but one teacher and you are all brothers (Mt 23:8).
It is “drawn from the Gospel passage in which Jesus criticises the hypocrisy of those who fail to practise what they preach (cf Mt 23:1–12). When our faith is reduced to empty words, unconcerned with the lives and needs of others, the creed we profess proves inconsistent with the life we lead. The danger is real. That is why Jesus uses strong language about the peril of falling into self-idolatry…

On Thursday, February 4, the world will observe the first International Day of Human Fraternity. In December 2020, the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution based on an initiative that was introduced by the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“We are asking people, stop seeing bad things happen and remaining quiet” —ASP Claire Guy-Alleyne, Head of the Gender-Based Violence Unit, T&T Police Service

Some of the most harrowing scenes I saw on TV at the close of 2020 were the conditions in a Tunapuna home in which a 92-year-old woman lived. As the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian reported: “The house…resembled a dump, with huge piles of garbage dominating the entire property, including the bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom areas.”
Thanks to Latoya Greaves, the elderly woman was finally treated at a hospital for open wounds on her legs and taken to a safe house.

In search of a better life or just out of sheer desperation, many have jumped on a pirogue and spent their last dollar in search of a brighter tomorrow. A woman once told me that if men didn’t exist for a day, she would go on a hike by herself. When she said this, I reflected on it for quite some time. We, as men, sometimes don’t realize the simple privileges that we have in everyday life but beyond this, men also don’t realize how their actions can cause the uneasiness of women.
