Preparing for the Christ-child

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

On this second Sunday of Advent we will light the second candle on the Advent wreath—the Bethlehem candle (purple), which symbolises love and represents Christ’s manger.

Sunday, December 8 is also the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Be peacebuilders

MEDIA RELEASE
MEDIA RELEASE

The Catholic Commission for Social Justice (CCSJ) urges citizens to be Peacebuilders in our land/world this Christmas. During this season of Advent, as we await the birth of the Christ-child, the Prince of Peace, let us remember that we must not be armchair Christians waiting passively.

This is a time of active hope; hope that the living Christ, who lives in and among us, will strengthen us to save our beloved country and our world which are scarred by violence and discord; hope that God will fill our hearts with His mercy, love, compassion and forgiveness so that we will live as honest/upright citizens.

Awaiting the greatest giver of gifts

At this Christmas when Christ comes, will He find a warm heart? Mark the season of Advent by loving and serving others with God’s own love and concern. – St Teresa of Kolkata

I am in London at the moment and have been engaging the young ones in our family in discussions about Advent. For example, I asked them what gifts they would give to baby Jesus if, like the Magi, they were present at the birth of the Christ-child.

Restoring the horizon of hope

Today is the First Sunday of Advent; the beginning of a new liturgical year.

In the Angelus on this day in 2013, Pope Francis reminded us that “this day has a special charm; it makes us experience deeply the meaning of history. We rediscover the beauty of all being on a journey: the Church, with her vocation and mission, and all humanity, peoples, civilisations, cultures, all on a journey across the paths of time. But where are we journeying? Is there a common goal? And what is this goal?”
