The objectives of the Tour are:

  1. To raise awareness of the inhumanity of the death penalty and of its ineffectiveness as a crime reduction strategy.
  2. To share alternative strategies for crime reduction.
  3. To encourage governments to vote for a moratorium at the UN.
  4.  To mobilise support from organisations and individual for the fight against the  death penalty.

To date there is no empirical evidence to determine a link between crime rates and the application of the death penalty. Yet capital punishment is often portrayed as a means to reduce high volumes of violent crimes. While capital punishment does not act as a deterrent for violent crimes, there are a number of preventive strategies to address rising crime rates such as investing in education, youth development and job creation, reducing poverty and socio-economic inequality. These strategies can contribute to build a safer, more democratic and just society in the Greater Caribbean.
