Restoring our souls

There are times in life that we feel hurt, broken… but God promises to restore our soul, and God does this through Jesus Christ. Psalm 23 reminds us of the advantages to be gained if we entrust our lives to Jesus Christ: we enter the kingdom of God where we will not want for nourishment for our souls. He will grant us peace from anxiety and stress, as he leads us beside quiet waters. He will guide us in the paths of righteousness so that we can conform our ways to the will of God. When we meet with danger and life threatening conditions in life, we will not be afraid because we know that Jesus will not abandon us even in death.

Many times in our day-today lives we encounter persons who also promise this peace and security. They come at times when we are especially down and/or needy. They attack when we are most vulnerable or they offer us the promise of a much better life, promising things like great financial rewards, emotional happiness and successful careers. These persons seek to exploit others and are really thieves and abusers or simply selfish. They do not live by and teach God’s will.

If we live as God wants us to, we will always seek to ensure that there is justice in the world. Justice means that the world’s people live in harmony with each other and the common good of all is sought and strived toward. “Building a just social and civil order, wherein each person receives what is his or her due, is an essential task which every generation must take up anew.” Pope Benedict XVI Deus Caritas Est. We will be open to recognising the suffering of others and to take action to assist in alleviating the suffering.

The average person thinks of justice as punishment for sins and offenses against the law, but the biblical concept of justice is built around showing mercy to those in need, to the oppressed and the downtrodden. The biblical concept calls for us to live as though other people matter, to educate ourselves and others about justice, to get involved in the community and to give a voice to those who have no voice.

Justice as we conceive it in the modern world is built on regulations and rules of behaviour. But our rules and regulations have little if anything to do with establishing and maintaining an equitable and fair society. Acts 2:42-47 shows us a society built on absolute principles of equity. “All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.” True equity such as they practiced conforms to God’s will perfectly. Devout fellowship in praising God and attending to the teaching of his disciples conforms people to the will of God. Living together in loving fellowship under God conforms us perfectly to God’s will. Such closeness to God fills our lives with awe and wonder. It opens us up to his miraculous powers and allows us to see signs and miracles. Perfect conformity to God’s will fills our lives with the power of God.  He restores our soul.

In John 16:33 God tells us to take heart, he has overcome the world.  We must know and listen to Jesus.
