CCSJ calls for community mobilization to end violence against women

MEDIA RELEASE

On the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25) the Catholic Commission for Social Justice (CCSJ) calls for community mobilization to end violence against women in TT/the world.

We cannot remain silent/indifferent in the face of the onslaught of such violence. It dehumanizes all of us. It plagues all strata of every society; all religious and ethnic groups.

“Humanity is like a bird with its two wings—the one is male, the other female. Unless both wings are strong and impelled by some common force, the bird cannot fly heavenwards.” (Abdu’l-Bahá, 1913)

On Wednesday, March 8, the world will observe International Women’s Day. Women and men are part of the Body of Christ – made in His image and likeness (Gen 1:27), each with innate dignity; made to complement each other and to use their gifts/skills to build His Kingdom here on earth.

‘Mother Seacole’, model of selfless service

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ and Director, CREDI

Do you know about Mary Seacole (1805-1881), the Jamaica-born nurse who cared for wounded British servicemen during the Crimean War in the 19th century (1853-1856)?

She was born to a Scottish soldier and a Jamaican woman. Read her memoir, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands originally published in 1857 or any of the other books written about her.
My heart soared when I heard that after a 12-year fundraising campaign by the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal, Martin Jennings’ bronze statue honouring her was unveiled at St Thomas’ Hospital on Thursday, June 30.

“Women don’t just bear life but transmit to us the ability to see otherwise, they see things differently…” Pope Francis

Tuesday, March 8, the world will observe International Women’s Day which, as the United Nations (UN) states “is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.”
