Addressing the root causes of crime

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“They are not cockroaches.  They are not monsters. They are of us. Raised for better or worse by this society which continues to enable them. Hypocrisy will not save us. We must find the courage to create change”—Verna St Rose Greaves, social worker, social activist.

Let’s join with others in praying with the family of Andrea Bharatt, who mourn the tragic loss of their loved one, and for the repose of her soul. Pray also for the multitude of other men, women and children who have lost their lives through violence over the years. There is a ground-swell of anger, fear, and frustration.

“In order to stop violence against girls and women and instill the values of respect, dignity, honesty and morality towards all human beings, we must start from the family, which is the fundamental basis of society…What happens behind the walls of the home is reflected on a larger scale in society…Parents need to be the first instruments of change” (Msgr Savio Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of Mumbai).

Violence/discrimination against girls and women is pervasive and occurs in every country, in every segment of society, regardless of class, ethnicity, or culture and quite literally from womb to tomb.

“It is time for fathers and mothers to return from their exile, because they have self-exiled from the education of their children, and to fully reassume their educational role…this can only be done with love, tenderness and patience.” – Pope Francis

We must consider also the importance of home, school, community partnerships in the education process. Pope Francis has also said: “…the educational pact today has been broken; and thus, the educational alliance between society and the family is in crisis because mutual trust has been undermined. There are many symptoms. For example, at school relationships between parents and teachers have been compromised.”
