There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children” – Nelson Mandela.

On Tuesday, November 20, the world will commemorate Universal Children’s Day. It also marks the 22nd anniversary of the adoption of United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This day is celebrated each year “to put public initiatives and campaigns in place to raise awareness of children’s rights worldwide, awareness of their situation in life, problems, wishes, needs and longings as well as to enable exchanges and meetings between them” (UNRIC).

On Saturday June 16 (my birthday) I delivered the feature address at the AGM of the IRO on the above theme (download address) Are we building strong families? Do our families have an opportunity to participate in the social, economic, physical and cultural activities of our nation?

The family is the bedrock of our society. Strong families build strong communities which in turn can build a strong nation.

“There is something shifting in our value system and we must do something about it.”

These words were uttered by Rebekah Ali-Gouveia, founder and director of the Elpis Centre, as she addressed more than 200 persons at the opening of last week’s two-day Caribbean Conference entitled: “Life and Family Values: Stabilizing Our Future”.

The Elpis Centre, a Christian organisation which opened in 2009 in Freeport, T&T, is a pregnancy and family resource Centre.

Catholic family, become what you are

Leela Ramdeen

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them to become what they are capable of being”  (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)

The Archdiocese’s pastoral priority this year is: The New Evangelization. The sub-theme is: Catholic family, become what you are. This theme reflects Pope John Paul II’s plea (in his encyclical, The Christian Family in the Modern World) for families to “become what you are, the domestic Church and the heart of the world.”
