Inside the Constitution Reform Report…a review by the CCSJ

On Wed 29 January 2014, I attended a meeting at which the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. Prakash Ramadhar, presented copies of the Report from the Commission which conducted the National Consultation on Constitutional Reform. CCSJ had submitted to the Commission, written recommendations which had been approved by Archbishop Joseph Harris.

Hon. Prakash Ramadhar, Minister of Legal Affairs, chaired the Commission for Constitutional Reform which was launched on Sat 2 March, 2013. Members of the Commission were: Dr Hamid Ghany, Justice Amrika Tiwary-Reddy, Carlos Dillon and Dr Merle Hodge. Justice Sebastian Ventour, who had been appointed, resigned when he became a member of the Integrity Commission.

Moral criteria must guide Budget

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:  I have just read online from London that on Monday, September 9, the Minister of Finance, Hon Larry Howai, will present T&T’s national budget in Parliament. Last year’s budget was the country’s largest ever, with total expenditure being $58.4 billion compared to $54.6 billion in the 2011/2012 budget. The theme of the 2012- 2013 budget, delivered on October 1, 2012, was: Stimulating Growth, Generating Prosperity.  Who is prospering in T&T?

Concerns about administering HPV Vaccine in TT Schools

gardasilThe Catholic Church has no ethical objection to any Vaccine that is safe and effective. The Archdiocese of Port of Spain is aware of the January 2007 Position Paper  by the Catholic Medical Association of America and Canada (CMA) on the implementation of the Gardasil vaccine for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration, USA, on 8 June 2006 and which is meant to  protect girls and young women between the ages of 9 and 26 against four of the most common high risk HPV subtypes/strains: HPV 16 and HPV 18, that cause 70 per cent of cervical cancers, and HPV 6 and HPV 11, that cause 90 per cent of  genital warts.

9th World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, May 21st 2012 in light of Catholic Social Justice and Human Rights

This May 21st, UN World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development will be celebrated the world over. First declared in 2001 by the United Nations General Assembly for the purpose of highlighting the values of peace and solidarity it was first observed two years later on 21st May 2003.
