The second reading this Sunday (1 Cor 12:31 – 13:13) is most appropriate as we focus on Haiti. We need to “strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts” so that we can build a spirituality of justice in our communities, in our country and in the world.
“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children” (Nelson Mandela). I thought about Mandela’s words as people called in to a Television programme on which I was a guest. They called to donate money to Hanna Lendor’s fund.
Today, Sunday 20 December, the world marks International Human Solidarity Day to celebrate unity in diversity; to remind people of the importance of solidarity in working towards eradicating poverty and to remind governments of their commitments to international agreements.

As we prepare for the coming of the Christ-child, let us act on the advice of Pope Benedict XVI, who said recently:
“Advent, this intense liturgical time… invites us to pause in silence to grasp a presence. It is an invitation to understand that every event of the day is a gesture that God directs to us, sign of the care he has for each one of us. ..Advent invites and stimulates us to contemplate the Lord who is present. Should not the certainty of his presence help us to see the world with different eyes? Should it not help us to see our whole existence as a ‘visit,’ as a way in which he can come to us and be close to us, in each situation?”
