Sharing in God’s gift

“The miracle was not worked from nothing, but from a first modest sharing of what a simple lad had brought with him. Jesus does not ask us for what we do not have. Rather, he makes us see that if each person offers the little he has, the miracle can always be repeated: God is capable of multiplying our small acts of love and making us share in his gift.”(Pope Francis on John 6:1-15)

I thank God for one of the great miracles he has wrought in my life recently. My father, who was 90 years old on July 22, decided to pick some mangoes for my nephew who, like many members of our family, was on his way from London to celebrate this milestone with him.

Gospel Mk 6:30-34

The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”
People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

Leaders who care

Our world needs leaders who are caring/compassionate. Such characteristics are usually found in individuals who see themselves as “servant-leaders.” Today’s Gospel reading (Mark 6:30-34) highlights this fact. In Mark 6:7-13 Jesus had sent the 12 disciples on mission. After preaching, anointing and healing the sick, they rejoined Him.

Gospel Mk 6:7-13

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick— no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.”
So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured.

World Youth Skills Day

On Wednesday 15^th July the world will celebrate the first World Youth Skills Day. “On 18th December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus, a resolution, spearheaded by Sri Lanka, declaring 15th July as the World Youth Skills Day. Sri Lanka initiated this resolution, with the assistance of the G77 & China, to highlight at a global level, the importance of youth skills development. The goal is to achieve better socio-economic conditions for today’s youth, including as a means of addressing the challenges of unemployment and under employment” (www.un.org).
