CCSJ calls on citizens to lend a helping hand this Christmas

The Catholic Commission for Social Justice (CCSJ) calls on each person to lend a helping hand to those who are struggling this Christmas. Leela Ramdeen, Chair of CCSJ says:

“Christmas is a time of joy, anticipation and celebration as we wait for the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. It’s a time when the spirit of giving is alive and well in TT and around the world. As we give, let us not hold back; let us remember the words of Mother Teresa who said: ‘I must be willing to give whatever it takes to do good to others. This requires that I be willing to give until it hurts. Otherwise, there is no true love in me, and I bring injustice, not peace, to those around me.’ The writer Robert Louis Stevenson is correct; we can never love without giving.”

Gospel: Mk. 1:1-8

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.”
John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

On November 26, CCSJ held its annual general meeting (AGM) to report on its 2013 activities (read report here). Archbishop Joseph Harris joined us and motivated members, not only by his presence and by his words of thanks for the work in which members are engaged to further the mission of the Church, but also because of the challenges he threw out to us. For example, he challenged us to let our lives be a blessing for one another and to “DREAM BIG!”

Holy Spirit, inspire us all to work to eliminate stigma and discrimination which continue to undermine prevention, treatment and care of persons living with HIV and AIDS and to promote the dignity of each human person.

We pray also for those individuals and organisations that strive to meet the physical, mental, spiritual, and economic needs of persons living with HIV and AIDS. We pray also for those who work tirelessly to find possible cures for HIV and AIDS and for those who have died of AIDS, may their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.
