by Archbishop Joseph Harris
by Archbishop Joseph Harris

Gospel: John 1:29-34

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”

Confronting a culture of violence

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ and Director, CREDI

“Our society needs both more personal responsibility and broader social responsibility to overcome the plague of violence in our land and the lack of peace in our hearts.”(Confronting a Culture of Violence: A Catholic Framework for Action – US Bishops, 1994).

Violence in our society continues unabated. Legislation on its own will never make people ‘moral’ or inculcate in them the values that will help us to build a just society.  “A just society can become a reality only when it is based on the respect for the transcendent dignity of the human person…since the order of things is to be subordinate to the order of persons, and not the other way around” (Gaudium et Spes).

Archbishop Harris’ Gospel Reflection Jan 12 – Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (A)

by Archbishop Joseph Harris
by Archbishop Joseph Harris

Gospel: Mt 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?”
Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.
After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

An app to support New Year resolutions?

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ and Director, CREDI
by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ and Director, CREDI

As we enter into our Archdiocese’s Third Pastoral Priority – Regenerating the Moral and Spiritual Values of our Society, let us reflect on how we can develop our spirituality during 2014.

Today many people are using new technology to help them maintain their resolutions. There are many free/cheap apps that one can download onto a smartphone or tablet to help achieve one’s goals. As Douglas Saunders, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, says: “The best resolutions are specific, measurable, achievable, rewardable and timely. And, because tech never sleeps, apps can help people remember what they need to do to achieve their new goals.”
