Over the past few years CCSJ has organized a competition linked to Respect for Life Week for under14 year-olds and 14-19 year olds. The Theme for the Competition this year was: “What are the core Christian values that guide you on your life’s journey?” CCSJ would like to thank those who submitted essays in response to this competition.
Have you reflected on the core values that guide you on your life’s journey? As Archbishop Gilbert used to say: Virtues inform values and values influence behaviour. We should ask ourselves: Is my behaviour in alignment with my Christian values? Are my values reflected in the decisions that I make? Each one of us is a member of our Church. Each of us has a role to play in transforming our society so that it reflects Gospel values. WE must SEE, JUDGE, and ACT. Neutrality is not an option. Our life must be our witness. Integral human development requires us to inculcate, practise, and pass on to our youth authentic values that will help us and them to choose “truth”.
Ten-year-old Celine Regis, of South Oropouche RC School, won the prize in the under 14 year-old category. She wrote as follows:

In daily prayers we recite our Creed, and it has always been a source of comfort and strength to me. I believe in an all powerful God who created the heavens, the earth, and with the same amount of skill, love and time created me. This alone has helped me so much every day, and there are other Christian values that inspire and guide me in my journey of life.
The deepest part of my soul, where my values influence me, make me try every day to follow God’s Commandments every step of the way. I believe that one way to show God you love Him is to go to Church at any time to praise and worship Him. My family attends Mass on Saturday evenings and on Feast days and I believe we are always truly blessed by God.
When I was a very little girl, my parents taught me how to pray. It was a wonderful experience to come together as a family and pray, because it was sometimes the only time we got to do this for the day. I was a premature baby. I was born two and a half months early. Thanks to the prayer of my parents, grandparents, and other relatives and friends, God saved my life. Since then, everyone calls me ‘the miracle baby.’ I truly believe that it is because of the power of God that I am here today. I am now a Standard Five child, writing the Secondary Entrance Assessment next year. My parents continue to raise me well as a ‘miracle child.’ I ask whoever is reading this to pray for me and my class as we prepare for the SEA exams. Many people look down on our school as we are not a prestige school in San Fernando, Port of Spain, or any such place, but we work really hard. We don’t have many facilities that prestige schools do, but we all wish to pass for our first choices and so are dedicating a lot of time to studying really hard. I believe that prayer can help any situation, and that the more people pray about something, the more possible it gets. Remember us in your prayers.
These are therefore my core values as a Christian. I believe in God and love Him with all my heart and soul. I follow the Ten Commandments, I worship God in prayer and by attending Church regularly and I believe that prayer to God brings great results. It may be simple, but it is what I believe, and therefore who I am.”
