Gospel- Lk. 3:15-22

The Word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin. As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ, John answered them all, “I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”

Reflection on Jesus’ Baptism and ours

As we read about Jesus’ baptism in today’s Gospel (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22), let us reflect on our own baptism and on what it means to be baptised into the Catholic Church.

Our Catechism (1213) tells us that “Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit…and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons and daughters of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: ‘Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word’.”

Archbishop Harris’ Gospel Reflection January 6 – Solemnity of the Epiphany (C)

by Archbishop Joseph Harris
by Archbishop Joseph Harris

Gospel Mt 2:1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

Let us follow the Light

Today we observe the feast of the Epiphany. The word “Epiphany” means “manifestation” or “revelation.” At the heart of the story of the visit of the Magi is the manifestation of the incarnation to all of humanity. God so love the world that He sent His only son, Jesus Christ, to save us.  “The Word was made flesh, he lived among us” (John 1:14). Jesus, the light of the World, was 100% human and 100% divine. He came to save, not just the people of Israel, but all of humanity.
