God created man in His own image and likeness.  As it originates man is by design made to have a high regard or respect, for the qualities of God and man should show honour and respect by his actions.  Jesus Christ said, “What you do to the least of my brethren, you do unto me” (Mt 25:40).  We have to be disciples of Jesus and be living examples of our faith to fully respect life.

The Church has to help us to understand our rights and respect our rights and responsibilities.  As Catholics we have to become more aware of the Faith teachings and doctrines about Life Issues.  What should be abundantly clear is that Life has to be respected from the moment of conception to the moment of death and within the conditions and environment that precedes these moments.

Catholics have to be more visible about our beliefs and stand up for the rights and life of the human being called into its earliest existence by God.  No one has the right to end the life of an innocent human being, to destroy God’s design.  We have to be against every form of abortion of life at any stage.  Are we truly willing to stand up against programs of the civil and health authorities, scientific organizations and governments’ violation of the unborn child’s right to life?

We have to mentor our young people about abstinence.  This will prevent unwanted conception but most importantly, define the sanctity and respect for marriage.  Our Church teaches that every marital act has a direct relationship with the procreation of human life.  We must condemn contraception and sterilization.  We must condemn embryonic stem cell research and human cloning as the reasoning can never justify experimentation on living human embryos or fetuses.  As for Infertility treatments and procedures, the Church deems that in marriage, spouses do not have the right to have a child; however they have the right to natural marital acts ordered to procreation.

God gave His Commandments to help us to follow the right path and He gave us Jesus Christ as our Redeemer with the promise of forgiveness if we should stray from the right path.  We have to support those who might be considering abortion and show them that there are positive alternatives to help in the provision for their child.  We should support and counsel families and institute co-operative child-caring.  For those who have had an abortion, we have to reach out and strengthen their hope to seek the grace that the Lord has given us in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

As Catholics we must show dignity for the human person and be ready to defend human lives.  We have to truly examine ourselves and our inner feelings when it pertains to capital punishment or particularly, the death penalty.  Can we really see beyond the criminal acts and see the individual who is in need of forgiveness.  If we can truly have compassion like our Lord Jesus Christ, we will be able to share the pain of our fellow men.  We will neither kill another person, regardless of how horrendous their actions, nor end the life of anyone whose suffering is unbearable for us.

Indeed any objective even though it is noble in itself cannot justify the violation of the rights and respect for the human life.  This will be an existence without a conscience.  As Catholics we have the right and responsibility to respect life.  We must instruct the ignorant, give counsel and comfort, admonish the sinner, bear patiently, forgive and pray for others both living and dead.  We can apply the beliefs of the Catholic Church especially the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy.  Showing respect should be in honour of God and for God, as is summed up in the Great Commandments:  Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul and with all your mind.  The other, Love your neighbor as yourself. (Mt. 22:37-39)  Our faith gives us the tools we can use to actively be an outward sign of God’s love and compassion and respect for life.
