Improving Life
by Gerard and Jon-Raphael Sealy

“Life begins like the rising sun,

Its brilliance cannot be outshone,

No matter what is done.

This light as bright as life

Is filled with radiance and fights

It never dims or looses glare

Until it sets and sails with fanfare”

Respect for life is one of the greatest qualities one can display.  It is by such an action, that an individual can show recognition to their peers, counterparts or even their enemies.  People in Trinidad and Tobago have over the years neglected the simple lesson of having respect for life.  Now the meaning of respect according to the Oxford Concise Dictionary is “feeling of deep admiration for someone elevated by their qualities or achievements, polite greeting, feel or have respect for, avoid harming or interfering with.

Improving respect for life in Trinidad and Tobago can begin with a simple but effective good morning, manners are one of the greatest compliments one can exhibit.  Having self respect is another great quality along with respect for elders, following the Ten Commandments, reading the Bible, going to church and just being responsible.

Our mummy always tells us to stop fighting and quarreling and to try problem solving and mediation to solve our disagreements, she says that those are attributes which some adults do not have and that is why their arguments end up with one or both of the parties dead or damaged.  Mummy would usually say “Jon-Raphael and Phillippe what do you both think Jesus would be saying about the both of you right now?  Do you think he is pleased with your actions?  Jon have some respect for your older brother and Phillippe show respect to get respect.  Now the both of you apologise to each other”.

Sometimes my brother Phillippe would go outside six o’clock in the morning and crow like a chicken, mummy would say “boy you think you would like someone to make noise in your head if you are sleeping”,  this shows to love your neighbor as your self and do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Adults should also learn not to use obscene language for anyone to hear because it is not only disrespectful to children but also to other adults.  Adults should be a lot more compassionate to persons who are sick and those who have the HIV Virus.  Some adults have no respect for other people’s privacy and are always meddling in their personal lives.  People should be allowed to express themselves in a positive way but also be allowed to have privacy in their lives at the same time.  Some of our public figures need to understand this and remember that the Bible says when some one slaps you in the face turn the other cheek and not always an eye for an eye.

Jesus showed a lot of respect for life.  Some such ways were when he cured the blind man and his sight came back, when he brought Lazarus back from the dead, and when he cast out the demons from the man and sent them into the pigs and most of all when he allowed himself to be sacrificed on the cross for us.  People in Trinidad and Tobago need to be more like him and it is by this example respect for life can be improved in Trinidad and Tobago where life should begin like the rising sun, its brilliance cannot be outshone, no matter what is done.  This light as bright as life is filled with radiance and fights, it never dims or looses glare until it sets and sails with fanfare.
