CCSJ congratulates graduates of Social Justice online course

On Friday 9th September, five of the seven persons who completed the 2010 Social Justice online course with the University of Dayton (UD) – in partnership with CREDI – The Catholic Institute, and CCSJ, graduated at St Finbar’s Auditorium along with those who had completed their Masters in Educational Leadership course with UD.

Leela Ramdeen, Chair of CCSJ, presented the five students and recommended them to receive certification to Dr Kevin Kelly, Dean of UD’s School of Education.  Sr Angela Zukowski, Director for the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives, presented each student with his/her Certificate.

Gospel Mt 18:21-35

Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?”  Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt.

Nation building – a shared responsibility

“For all the advances we have made, and are making in education, we still every year allow thousands more children to join an educational underclass – they are the lost souls our school system has failed. It is from that underclass that gangs draw their recruits, young offenders institutions find their inmates and prisons replenish their jails. These are young people who, whatever the material circumstances which surround them, grow up in the direst poverty – with a poverty of ambition, a poverty of discipline, a poverty of soul.”

These words could have been uttered by someone in T&T about our education system here. In fact, this is the opinion of the Rt Hon Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education in England. His warning was published in the UK’s Daily Mail on Sept 1. He was speaking at Durand Academy in south London.

Jesus said to his disciples: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen,
take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.
