Celebrating Mothers

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“A world that looks to the future without a mother’s gaze is shortsighted…In today’s fragmented world, where we risk losing our bearings, a Mother’s embrace is essential” (Pope Francis).

Today, Sunday, May 9, we celebrate, honour, and affirm mothers. Let our outpouring of love continue throughout the year.

St Joseph, Model of Workers

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

What are you doing to observe the Year of St Joseph? You will recall that to mark the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration of St Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis issued an apostolic letter, Patris Corde (With a Father’s Heart).

Developing a special bond with the Shepherd

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

It is always heartening to read comments from persons who access CCSJ’s resources on our website. I recall receiving a request from a religious congregation in the USA who were celebrating the 100th anniversary since the  congregation was founded. They were producing a book to mark the occasion and asked if they could include four of our articles in it.

Today’s gospel, Luke 24:35–48,  reminds us of what it means to be a witness to Christ. In order to be faithful witnesses, we must allow Jesus to do as He did to His disciples: open our minds “to understand the scriptures”.

Creating a child-friendly nation

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

Recently, I was interviewed by Onika James of radio i95.5FM, about the killing of two minors, Simeon Daniel, 15, and Antonio Francois, 16, who, along with three other youths, had escaped from one of the facilities run by the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (CA).
Two of the other youths were shot but are in stable condition. The fifth minor, Ricardo Thompson, 15,  has been speaking out about what he sees as deficiencies at the CA facility in which they were placed. They were in the care of the State when they escaped, sometime between March 19 and 20, after they squeezed through the burglar-proofing of a safe house.
