Discover and develop ‘your treasure’

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ and Director, CREDI

Today’s Gospel is replete with messages for us (Luke: 12: 32-48 on being ready for the Master’s return). I wish to focus on a particular line which is of key importance in today’s world: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

One can interpret these words in many ways. I want us to reflect on the virtues that should underpin our lives. Our treasure lies in Christian virtues – a habitual and firm disposition to do good. If we inculcate these in our hearts and live by them, we will surely be ready for the Master’s return. As St Gregory of Nyssa said: “The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God.”

St Paul urges us to “live in a manner worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together…” (Ephesians 4: 1-3).
Let us pray for our clergy and religious in particular. We congratulate Bishop Robert Llanos who was recently installed as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of St John’s-Basseterre.

‘Mother Seacole’, model of selfless service

Do you know about Mary Seacole (1805-1881), the Jamaica-born nurse who cared for wounded British servicemen during the Crimean War in the 19th century (1853-1856)?

She was born to a Scottish soldier and a Jamaican woman. Read her memoir, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands originally published in 1857 or any of the other books written about her.
My heart soared when I heard that after a 12-year fundraising campaign by the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal, Martin Jennings’ bronze statue honouring her was unveiled at St Thomas’ Hospital on Thursday, June 30.
