In CCSJ’s Newsletter which will be distributed in time for Respect For Life Week ( October 6 – 13), we share with the faithful extracts from the Note with pastoral recommendations for the Year of Faith, issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This note invites the faithful “to read closely and meditate upon Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei (the “door of Faith”). Inter alia, the Holy Father encourages us to learn more about the great figures of our faith, including Mary, the apostles, the saints, martyrs and confessors (Porta Fidei, 13).

On Saturday, September 8, the world observed International Literacy Day. It is estimated that there are more than 800 million illiterate persons in the world; of these two-thirds are women.
As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence, let us acknowledge the many ways in which the Catholic Church has contributed to building a just, fraternal society in T&T, the region, and internationally. The Catholic community remains the largest faith community in T&T/the world.
Preparing for the Year of Faith
Pope Benedict XVI will open the Year of Faith on October 11. October 11 is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council – a universal meeting of Bishops (October 11, 1962 – December 8, 1965); and the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church by Blessed John Paul II.
Also the Synod of Bishops on the theme: The New Evangelisation for the Transmission of the Christian Faith will run from Oct 7-28. The Year of Faith will close on November 24, 2013, Solemnity of Christ the King.

Sr Monica Tywang, shared with me recently the hope that filled her heart as she participated in the Vigil of Prayer for Peace at St Martin in the Fields,Londonto proclaim the first day of the 2012 Sacred Olympic Truce. The vigil, which commenced at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, June 8, ended at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 9.
