Our journey through Lent

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ
by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

Have you read the Holy Father’s 2011 Lenten Message? The title of his message is taken from St Paul’s Letter to the Colossians: “You were buried with Him in Baptism, in which you were also raised with Him. (Col 2:12)

CCSJ’s Lenten Newsletter will be distributed shortly and can be accessed on our website. The following is my introduction to the Newsletter: “As Zenit reports: ‘Pope Benedict XVI is proposing a journey with the Word of God this Lent and a deepening in the mystery of baptism. The Holy Father noted a ‘particular connection’ between baptism and Lent, ‘as the favourable time to experience this saving grace.’

Doing the will of the Father

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

On CCSJ’s monthly TV programme (Ask Why) on channel 10 Tuesday, Feb 22, I urged those involved in Carnival to embrace the teachings of our faith regarding modesty, appropriate behaviour etc. Remember, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19-20).

On the programme Dr Hollis Liverpool aka Chalkdust – described as “one of calypso’s true intellectuals”, Felix Edinborough, T&T’s best Pierrot Grenade, and I, discussed the theme: Promoting Social Justice through Culture. A copy of the programme is available on DVD from CCSJ’s office.

Standing up for our beliefs

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

Recently I heard that I was being “pounded” on a radio programme about views I had expressed in the media about the Church’s teaching on same-sex marriage/union. I recall what the representative of the Parish Council at Los Bajos RC Church, Erin, said to me when he presented me with a plant, known locally as the “Crown of Thorns”. He reminded me that all of us who walk in the footsteps of our Lord must be prepared to suffer for our faith.

Social Justice and individual responsibility

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

In November 2010, Pope Benedict said that the Catholic lay persons must be educated in the Church’s social teaching:

“It is necessary to prepare lay people capable of dedicating themselves to the common good, especially in complex environments such as the world of politics…Lay Catholics must undertake to promote the correct ordering of social life, while respecting the legitimate autonomy of worldly institutions…A profound understanding of the social doctrine of the Church is of fundamental importance, in harmony with all her theological heritage and strongly rooted in affirming the transcendent dignity of man, in defending human life from conception to natural death and in religious freedom.”

Walking in God’s ways

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

God had a plan when He created us. He imprinted in our minds a moral order so that we would live as he wants us to live. But he gave us free will to choose whether or not we follow his commandments. Reflect on the Psalm in today’s reading: (Ps 118: 1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34) e.g.  “…How happy those who respect His (God’s) decrees, and seek him with their whole heart…Oh, may my behaviour be constant in keeping your statutes…Explain to me how to respect your Law and how to observe it wholeheartedly. Guide me in the path of your commandments…”
