Use your gifts to build the common good

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

With the rise of secularism, sadly, many fail to acknowledge the fact, as Pope Benedict XVI reminds us in Charity in Truth, that all that we have is “gift” from God.

We live in a world in which individualism, selfishness, greed and materialism lead many to believe that what is important in this life is storing up wealth here on earth and keeping it all so that they can have a good time – like the rich man in today’s Gospel (Luke 12:13-21) who plans to build bigger barns to store up his “treasures” here on earth and then “take things easy, eat, drink, have a good time”.

Lord, teach us how to pray

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

In today’s Gospel (Luke 11:1-13), some of Jesus’ disciples ask him to teach them how to pray. Luke’s version of the Lord’s Prayer is shorter than the one we read in Matthew 6:9-11. During Holy Mass, the Lord’s Prayer is placed after the Eucharistic Prayer and before communion.

Reflection and right action

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

In today’s Gospel, we read the story of Martha and Mary who, with their brother, Lazarus, were Jesus’ friend. Luke does not mention Lazarus. He is mentioned in John’s Gospel. Last week Bishop Emeritus Sydney Charles from Grenada had lunch at my father’s home in Maraval. While my elder sister, Kamala, cooked up a ‘storm’, laid the table to perfection and was the perfect hostess when he arrived, I rushed in from a meeting at Archbishop’s House, sat at the table with the Bishop and listened to his words of wisdom.

Are you a faithful labourer?

by Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ

Today’s Gospel reading taken from Luke 10 contains some lines which I often use in my attempt to encourage people to “do” justice. Luke 10:2 states: “”The harvest is abundant but the labourers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out labourers for his harvest.”

Catholic Patriots for T&T (Part 2)

By Nadine Bushell, Corporate Secretary Catholic Commission for Social Justice

Patriotism is a virtue. Each of us is required to fulfil his/her duty as a citizen. Romans 13 verse 6:8 says “you must pay taxes, since all government officials are God’s officers. They serve by collecting taxes. Pay every government official what he has a right to ask – whether it be direct tax or indirect, fear or honour.” The only thing you should owe to anyone is love for one another, for to love the other person is to fulfil the law.
