We are interconnected

By Dominique Heffes-Doon, Research and Social Media Officer

“Grief is the acute pain that accompanies loss. Because it is a reflection of what we love, it can feel all-encompassing. Grief is not limited to the loss of people….” – Psychology Today

The Covid-19 pandemic has placed the world in a state of grief. As the above quote from Psychology Today shows, grief can be more than the loss of a deceased individual.
It can be experienced by the loss of a person, a former “pre-Covid” world and even one’s country and identity. In the case of the Venezuelan migrant community, the latter statement is a sobering reality.

Children on remand

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“Instances of racism continue to shame us, for they show that our supposed social progress is not as real or definitive as we think.” —Pope Francis.

In T&T, our Church has been speaking out over the years about the number of persons held on remand in prison for inordinate lengths of time awaiting trial. It is public knowledge that quite a number of persons have been in prison for a longer time than the maximum sentence they would have received had they been tried and convicted for the crime alleged to have been committed.

Investing in fathers

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“Every family needs a father – a father who shares in his family’s joy and pain, hands down wisdom to his children, and offers them firm guidance and love…a father should be close to his wife, to share everything, joy and sorrow, hope and hardship. And … be close to his children as they grow.” (Pope Francis)

On Wednesday, June 16, I celebrated my birthday. Birthdays always provide us with an opportunity to reflect on our lives.
I thank God that both my parents were in my life until adulthood and beyond. Now that they have left this earth, I cherish the many positive memories I have of them. I am fortunate that I had my father in my life. On this Father’s Day, let’s thank God for the many good fathers who undertake their duties and love their families.
