Created out of love, to love

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

Today’s gospel, Matthew 22:34–40, is at the heart of Pope Francis’ Encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, on Fraternity and Social Friendship.
The Sadducees had already failed to trap Jesus. Now the Pharisees put Him to a test, asking Him which is the greatest commandment of the Law. There were 613 prescriptions/precepts in the law of Moses.
Jesus answers: “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.”

Poverty and the dignity of the person

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“Without a solution to the problems of the poor, we will not solve the problems of the world. We need projects, mechanisms and processes to implement better distribution of resources, from the creation of new jobs to the integral promotion of those who are excluded.” (Pope Francis)

We are one human family, and we have a responsibility to stand in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable if we are to fulfil God’s command: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”
Saturday, October 17 was the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The theme this year is: Acting together to achieve social and environmental justice for all.

By Leela Ramdeen, Chair, CCSJ & Director, CREDI

“In order to stop violence against girls and women and instill the values of respect, dignity, honesty and morality towards all human beings, we must start from the family, which is the fundamental basis of society…What happens behind the walls of the home is reflected on a larger scale in society…Parents need to be the first instruments of change” (Msgr Savio Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of Mumbai).

Violence/discrimination against girls and women is pervasive and occurs in every country, in every segment of society, regardless of class, ethnicity, or culture and quite literally from womb to tomb.
